A Pattern for Prayer (Part 1)

Jabez was more honored than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez and said, “I gave birth to him in pain.” 10 Jabez called out to the God of Israel: “If only you would bless me, extend my border, let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will not experience pain.” And God granted his request.

Reflect

On Sunday, Pastor Dallas shared 5 parts to Jabez’s pattern of prayer. Today, let’s look at part one:

1: INTIMACY

That language (more honored) in the original Hebrew refers not to his social status or place in the familial pecking order. Jabez was more honored because of his relationship with God. Right living is a prerequisite for powerful prayer. 

James 5:16 says it this way: The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.

Jesus has made it possible for you and I to do this in a way that Jabez never could. By filling us with His Spirit — not with us, but in us — He has supplied us with all things needed pertaining to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). Prayer, then, begins as a partnership with the Spirit of God in which we are actively yielding ourselves to Him that He might further mold us into the righteous image of Christ, thereby allowing us to access all of the abundance that becomes ours in salvation.

Intimacy with God is essential to a dynamic prayer life. Take time today to be still and spend time talking with Him. Find a quiet place and pour out your heart to Him, then take time to listen. Ask God to increase your affections for Him, trusting that He’ll answer according to His promise.
