HEADLINE
The Grove Church was founded in 1933 as Piney Grove Baptist Church by five families committed to making the name of Jesus known in this community. At that time, Mars Hill Road was a dirt road and pine trees far outnumbered people.
The first building — a brush arbor — was constructed on the land our church continues to occupy today. Brought together by the Gospel and it’s ongoing work in their lives, these early members of Piney Grove Baptist Church were passionate about prayer and eager to engage with God’s Word.
Growing in grace and in number, the membership was marked by a spirit of faith and generosity. Members often met outside of official church gatherings in order to share their lives with one another.
The dirt roads are now densely trafficked. With almost 300,000 now living within several miles of our campus, people are quickly becoming more prevalent than pine trees. But the values that shaped our start are still guiding us into the future.
In 1933, Piney Grove got its name from the place where it was located. As we move into the future, it’s our prayer that we become a church defined not as a place, but as a people.
