Holy One

Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things. Let this be known throughout the earth.6 Cry out and sing, citizen of Zion, for the Holy One of Israel is among you in his greatness.”

Luke 1:28-35

And the angel came to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30 Then the angel told her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.” 34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not had sexual relations with a man?” 35 The angel replied to her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

John 6:61 & 66-69

Therefore, when many of his disciples heard this, they said, “This teaching is hard. Who can accept it?” 66 From that moment many of his disciples turned back and no longer accompanied him. 67 So Jesus said to the Twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?” 68 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Commentary: 

As I Am Holy

Look back to Isaiah 12:5-6, referring to God the Father as the Holy One. As you continue on in the Scriptures given, notice that Jesus takes on this name. The Son inherits the name showing that He is God in flesh (John 1:14). Before Christ took on flesh, the angels spoke of Him as the Holy One. As we look through scripture, God is described as: provider, healer, creator, full of compassion, gracious, and HOLY. In fact, we see the angels singing, Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord Almighty (Revelation 4:8). We see these very things in the Son and lived out in flesh among us!

The term “holy” means to be set apart, or something that is sacred. Jesus himself was Holy in the sense that he was set apart and meant to be different, to look like and be something we would have never known apart from Him. All of this, to accomplish the will of His Father.

But just as Jesus was called to be set apart to be used by the Father, so are we (1 Peter 1:16). Jesus makes clear that this is only possible by Him and through remaining in His word (John 15:1-8). So, because of the Holy One, we have not only been given the call to follow in His example of holiness; but because of Him we are given the ability to be holy by clinging to the one who is himself THE Holy One!

Prayer & Reflection: 

We are grateful for the One that You sent that we could be shown the gloriousness of who You are. We pray that you would tether our hearts to Jesus that we can do as you have called us to and be holy, as You are holy.
