Son of Man

Daniel 7:13-14

I continued watching in the night visions, and suddenly one like a son of man was coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was escorted before him.14 He was given dominion, and glory, and a kingdom; so that those of every people, nation, and language should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will not be destroyed.

Matthew 9:6-8

But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then he told the paralytic, “Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.” 7 So he got up and went home. 8 When the crowds saw this, they were awestruck and gave glory to God, who had given such authority to men.

John 3:14-17

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Matthew 25:31-34

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

Commentary: 

Fully Man, Fully God

Son of Man. This is a beautiful term when one stops to think about it. It implies relationship, but also affirms that Jesus Christ was not only fully God, but fully man as well. This God-man union was not flippant or lackadaisical; it was always the plan of God. In the Old Testament, many prophesies are made of Jesus Christ’s coming; in the New Testament, we see the fulfillment of those prophesies.

In human flesh, the Son of Man not only suffered for us, but suffered with us. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that He went through the same trials and tribulations that you and I face, yet without sin. He was hated, mocked, and scorned for us (John 15:18). But not without purpose; everything the Son of Man endured, He did for us. Know that this Son of Man suffered, bled, and died for you. Ultimately, because Jesus was fully man and fully God, it gives us hope of a life spent one day with our King.

Prayer & Reflection: 

May we never forget when we are shown hatred or persecution that Jesus experienced it all before and can empathize with us. He walks through it all with us! May that encourage us even more to rely on Him for our strength.
