For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awe-inspiring God, showing no partiality and taking no bribe. 20 You are to fear the Lord your God and worship him. 21 He is your praise and he is your God, who has done for you these great and awe-inspiring works your eyes have seen.
Psalm 24:8
Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.
Isaiah 9:6
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Luke 1:46-55
And Mary said: My soul praises the greatness of the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 because he has looked with favor on the humble condition of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 because the Mighty One has done great things for me, and his name is holy. 50 His mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear him. 51 He has done a mighty deed with his arm; he has scattered the proud because of the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has toppled the mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly. 53 He has satisfied the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering his mercy 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he spoke to our ancestors.
Commentary:
Jesus, Mighty God
Take a moment to reflect on the magnitude and significance of Jesus as our Mighty God. The One who is not just wise enough to give us counsel but also mighty enough to carry it out. The One who came as a babe in meekness, but will return again in majesty and all will bow down before Him (Romans 14:11).
We are a people who were weakened and crippled by our sin; a people in great need of a Rescuer who could free us from ourselves (Romans 7:24) and point us to lean into Him as our rock, our fortress, our deliverer (Psalm 18:2). In other words, our Mighty God.
Our need was for One whose mercies were new every day. One who would produce in us a reverence that would manifest itself in an outpouring of worship and praise like the world had never seen.
As we contemplate our helpless condition and our great need, let’s turn our eyes from the weakness of our flesh to the One who was made in the likeness of sinful flesh to be our sin offering (Romans 8:13) for our help. And who do we call on?
Who is this King of Glory? The God of gods, the Lord of lords, the Son, the Child, the Savior - Jesus Christ – Our Mighty God.
Prayer & Reflection:
Oh Mighty God, Lord Jesus, the One worthy of all my praise, who extends mercy to me every day: keep my heart ever in awe of Your great and mighty works. Like Mary, help me to always recognize you as the Mighty One and humble me as I bow in the presence of your greatness.
