His Eye is Ever Upon You

Scripture Readings:

Genesis 6:8

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

Luke 1:5-7

In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest of Abijah’s division named Zechariah. His wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both were righteous in God’s sight, living without blame according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord. But they had no children because Elizabeth could not conceive, and both of them were well along in years.

Psalm 34:15

The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry for help.

Commentary:

His Eye is Ever Upon You (Dallas White)

That first act of rebellion against God in the Garden soon gave way to a deluge of disobedience. By the time of Noah, the nations of the earth were utterly wicked and thus the heart of the Father was deeply grieved. But even in His grieving, God the Father was extending grace. When the skies opened and the waters rose, by grace, Noah and his family found salvation in the ark.

Many years later, in the midst of another extended period of rebellion, the eyes of the Lord were upon another man and his wife — Zechariah and Elizabeth. Though surrounded by sinful disobedience, they were righteous in the Father’s sight. What seemed like an impossibility — giving birth to a son in extremely old age — was actually God’s way of initiating a new and greater outpouring of His grace. The son that was born to Zechariah and Elizabeth became strong spiritually and spent his life proclaiming the Son of God to be the true and better Ark, come to offer eternal salvation to all who would enter in through Him.

Take heart today! Even in the midst of our most troubling times, the eyes of the Lord are always upon His people. No matter what you’re walking through today, no matter how circumstances might seem to be collapsing all around you, remember that the eyes of the Lord are upon you! He will never leave forsake those who are His own! As the old Gospel song says so well: I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free. His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

Prayer & Reflection:

Father, your eyes are never not upon us! Precious in the sight of the Lord are His people! We praise you today because we know that even when it seems as though the world is crumbling around us, we are not without hope! You are the God who sees His people and the God who meets us in the middle of our need. Glory to your great name!
