All of us want to find meaning and purpose in our lives. We hunger to contribute, to make a difference, to leave the world a better place than we found it. And yet, in the midst of this movement towards fulfillment, we’re often frustrated by the ordinary, average nature of our lives. We want to do something but we feel stifled by what we see as a lack of significance.

Our culture seems to validate these emotions at every turn. It feels as though only the famous — people with big platforms and powerful voices — can truly make a difference.

It was into a similar environment that Jesus began His church.

But Jesus did something different. Remarkably different. He didn’t choose the rich or powerful. He chose ordinary, average people to advance His mission.

Ron Walters says it like this: None of Jesus’ twelve disciples brought credentials into their roles. Most came from modest backgrounds with little distinction, an eclectic collection with run-of-the-mill talents. None had a theological degree. Not one fit the mold of rising religious star. Yet they became the chosen vehicles to carry Jesus’ timeless message.

or·di·nar·y is our study of these disciples and others like them. Each week, we’ll look to the examples of these men and women who refused to let their lives be limited by their ‘ordinary’ status and — as a result — ended up making an extraordinary impact.
